Buffalo Soldier
Indian Wars, 1880
Buffalo Soldier was the nickname given out of respect for the fierce fighting ability and dark curly hair (which resembled a buffalo's coat) of African American Troopers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments. Approximately twenty percent of all U.S. Cavalry troopers during this period were Black, and they fought over 177 engagements against American Indian tribes on a western frontier that extended from Montana to Texas.
