Khartoum
Sudan, 1885
In 1882, a holy war started against Christians and foreigners in the Sudan. The British forces sent to save General Charles Gordon and the garrison of Khartoum were too late. The city had fallen two days earlier after a siege of 313 days. With the fall of Khartoum, Islamic fundamentalists controlled the Sudan until 1898, but the country was re-conquered by the British and didn't achieve full independence from Britain until 1956.
