The Siege of Budapest
Hungary, 1944
In 1944, Hitler ordered his SS Cavalry divisions to join other German troops defending Budapest and to hold the city at all costs. Cavalry were never intended to fight in urban warfare. Their advantage over infantry lay in free wheeling maneuver over open terrain. Of the 80,000 soldiers who were killed, wounded or captured, only 170 Cavalry troopers escaped the soviet encirclement.
