I built a diorama for my brother Larry that I documented step-by-step. This was published in the February 2007 issue of Fine Scale Modeler. The seven phases to building and publishing your diorama are oulined on the subsequent pages.
  1. Inspiration: It's not only the cool idea you want to capture in your scene, but also who's is the audience you want to show it to?

2. Procurment: Sometimes the inspiration is a cool kit you find and then build the story around it. sometimes you'll have to buy kit's and accessories and then scratch build.

  1. Assembly A step that can't be rushed and remember to plan for painting while your building - use sub assemblies

4. Posing: Gravity works. everything sinks into a surface - whether it's a figure with it's hand on the back of another figure or treads on the surface of the ground.

5. Painting: base-coats and highlights; layers and shadows - nothing is ever just one color because of the play of light.

6. Presentation: how will you display the piece? It's best to have a solid base for fragile builds. start from the bottom up - literally.

7. Completion: Set up a photography area and use plenty of light. If you don't have a Web page or Blog, print the name, date and description
